STEAM learning is extremely important in the 21st Century

The world undergoes constant evolution and innovation. However, if there’s one thing that has not undergone much change, it is the common classroom. When you think about a classroom, a very generic image comes to mind, chairs, desks, dusty boards, and uninterested students. The classroom has remained unchanged, teacher and student dynamics have holistically remained unchanged. This is problematic on many levels. With a rise in technology STEAM learning is impacting modern-day learning. So it’s about time that we integrate the  tools this era offers are into classrooms.

There are many different innovations that can be seen happening in a few classrooms all over the world. For example, environment and teaching space is changing and because of this, children now have access to a multitude of different technologies outside the classroom, which is changing the way they think. Therefore it is important that they are also aware of how to use technology productively. This can only happen when new tech is an immersive part of today’s education, and more STEAM/STEM programs are introduced in schools.

What is STEAM Learning?

STEAM learning primarily focuses on science, technology, engineering arts, and mathematics. The schools in which STEAM education is practiced can be seen to be more engaging. The students learn different skills within the classroom. These skills are hard skills and soft skills. These skills are an integral part of character development as they help to shape the future of these students. The classrooms in which STEAM is practiced are widely different from your average classroom specifically because there is a focus on the main subjects through practical learning and experimentation. The students not only study the course but also practice it. This hands-on experience within the classroom equips the students with a different set of skills that they otherwise would not have had, had they experienced a normal classroom.

The impact that STEAM education has on individuals is clear. The development of hard and soft skills is very important. Engineering and Technology, creativity, Math and Science skills, design thinking, critical thinking, and collaboration are some examples of hard skills. On the other hand, communication, leadership, teamwork, adaptability and problem-solving are a few soft skills.

Expertise skill

When we teach students a subject with in-depth and practical experience, they tend to focus more on it and take a much more keen interest in it. Practical applications of subjects such as Engineering and Science are inherently important for students wishing to pursue them within their future careers if they put them with the expertise to be able to practice these STEM subjects. Considering that most of the courses that  STEM education is going to focus on, we need to train the youth of today for tomorrow.

It is important that our educational systems advance at the same pace as the rest of the world. Moreover, when students acquire expertise within a certain subject, they will be able to enhance their problem-solving skills. An innovative mindset and Creative Solutions to problems will help shape the future.

Communication

Without a doubt, communication is one of the most important skills that an individual can have in today’s society. If a person has all the knowledge in the world but does not know how to convey that message to the people that matter, the knowledge will not be of much use. It is important to be able to communicate with your peers. Creating dialogue within a classroom or a working space is incredibly important. It not only leads to the exchange of different ideas but also allows students to efficiently solve problems. Communication is also very important to establish leadership roles and to work in teams effectively. STEAM plays an important role in establishing soft skills within students so that they can communicate with one another.

Conclusion

STEAM education is rapidly spreading across the globe. It is the tool that most students now need to be successful in their future careers. The time is now that we begin to become the change we wish to see. STEAM Education is not only about developing practical skills but also about giving students the experience they need when they enter into their future careers. LearnoBots and many other such programs are working tirelessly to promote and encourage schools to offer STEAM camps within their institutions for a more innovative tomorrow.
